Jail Diversion · Since 2023
In 2023, The Beacon launched jail diversion so that women could remain in the community with their children, jobs, and support systems rather than being incarcerated for a substance use disorder.
Why diversion
A day at The Beacon costs about $26. A day at Mitchellville, Iowa's prison for women, costs about $108 (Iowa Auditor of State, FY2023).
Trauma-informed support in a safe home, rather than further traumatization behind bars.
She stays close to her children, her job, and the people who support her, so the cycle stops with her.
For courts and partners
Diversion gives a woman a structured, substance-free place to live and a team that walks alongside her, while she keeps the ties that make recovery last.
